Job Details

It is an exciting time to be joining the newly formed Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which has resulted from the merger of the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital and Bedford Hospital NHS Trusts on 1 April 2020. We’re also undergoing a major redevelopment with the creation of eight new operating theatres, a 22-bedded critical care unit, NICU and maternity department due for completion in 2024.   

The hospital is a regional centre of excellence for several key specialties, including; obesity research and surgery, maxillofacial surgery and head and neck cancer surgery. There is an Integrated pain management service, tertiary level NICU and one of the largest centres for breast screening in the country.

The hospital is a highly rated, diverse and forward-thinking place to work and serves a multi-cultural population across Bedfordshire and North Hertfordshire. The hospital has University status with UCL and the Royal Free, which provides an opportunity to strengthen our teaching and R&D programme and brings a more academic environment to the hospital. This department is fully committed to teaching and training both undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.  

We are looking for applicants for the post of Consultant Anaesthetist with an Interest in Critical Care Medicine at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, to join a friendly and dynamic department. The appointee will join a department of 42 Consultants, which currently includes 12 consultants with an interest in Critical Care Medicine (CCM) and will provide services in CCM as well as Anaesthesia. There are 16 Critical Care Beds including 9 beds in the High Dependency Unit and 7 beds in the Intensive Care Unit.

We are looking for an engaged and enthusiastic colleague and there will be opportunities to develop specialist skills, dependent on the appointee’s interests and the service demands. The appointee will take part in the provision of out of hour’s cover of the Intensive Care Unit (ITU) and the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Luton & Dunstable Hospital is a busy University Teaching Hospital situated adjacent to Junction 11 of the M1 Motorway. There’s very good access to Central London by road or rail and the Midlands and the North via the M1 and A1. The hospital is within twenty minutes of London Luton Airport. Residence is required within reasonable travelling time of the hospital.
