University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust Consultants in Acute Medicine Full time 10 PA’s – up to 12 PA’s on negotiable basis

There has never been a more exciting time to join our pioneering and expanding Acute Medicine department. Applications are invited for enthusiastic Acute Medicine Consultants to join our expanding 18 WTE team. We can offer job plans of up to 12 PA’s on a negotiable basis. We welcome applicants with a speciality interest and we have a successful track record of incorporating speciality sessions into our job planning. We offer an innovative and sustainable Consultant work pattern that has gained national acclaim. This system balances out of hours work with ample and flexible compensatory time off factored into the job plan. Educational and research activities will be strongly encouraged and we are proud to be affiliated with Keele Medical School which has achieved one of the highest student satisfaction scores in the country in recent years. We have substantially expanded our current services through multi-million pound investments and we are aiming to increase our total consultant numbers to 24 WTE. You will be well supported by a large group of Advanced Nurse Practitioners, 40 resident Junior doctors and a Middle Grade body of 13 CESR/Trust grade posts as well as 5 Acute Medicine ST3-7 trainees. We are a popular middle grade training centre affiliated to Health Education England (West Midlands) and we also run a successful CESR programme supporting the achievement of a CCT via this route. Our current services include a state of the art and well performing Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) unit, 65 bed AMU and 22 bed SSU at RSUH and a 30 bed AMU at our County site. Our modern AMU’s feature higher monitoring units as well as ultrasound facilities.

In October 2018 we launched a pioneering Acute Medical Rapid Assessment (AMRA) service at the RSUH site. The AMRA service has its own dedicated Acute Physicians, junior doctors and nurses who facilitate early consultant input for patients referred by the Emergency Department. The service is supported by a dedicated ward, co-located to the SSU and AMU, and complements our existing ambulatory care service by enhancing our same day discharge pathways. This service has resulted in up to 40% additional admission avoidance for ED referred patients and has attracted interest from many centres outside our region.

You will be working in a well-supported tertiary centre environment benefiting patients across our sites. There are established pathways in place streaming select acute patient groups directly into specialised services inc. primary PCI for STEMI’s, a Frail Elderly assessment unit, direct Renal, Neurology and Haematology/Oncology admissions and an Acute Stroke unit providing 24/7 thrombolysis and invasive vascular interventions. We operate a pioneering level of 7 day Consultant cover across all medical sub-speciality departments. The University Hospitals of North Midlands are based in Stoke on-Trent and Stafford, Staffordshire. There are excellent rail and road links being situated on the M6 motorway. Birmingham and Manchester are within easy travelling distance.

Staffordshire adjoins Cheshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, the West Midlands and Shropshire, and is part of the National Forest and Peak District National Park. Cannock Chase is within the County an area of outstanding Natural Beauty. There are 2 local universities and a number of high performing schools and colleges (including a number of independent and grammar schools). The area boasts affordable housing within easy commute to either of the main hospitals. Successful applicants will benefit from a generous relocation package of up to £8,000 . We look forward to hearing from you!!
