DETAILS / SUMMARY OF JOB
The post holder will join the Trauma & Orthopaedic department at King’s on the Denmark Hill site consisting of 23 orthopaedic and 4 plastic surgeons organised into 4 subspecialty firms (upper limb, lower limb, foot/ankle/paeds/limb recon and orthoplastics). The primary purpose of this role is to provide support and delivery of orthopaedic trauma care for adult and paediatric patients in keeping with the requirements of the Major Trauma service. In addition, there is a requirement to provide and support delivery of elective orthopaedic limb reconstruction services in line with the department’s status as a tertiary referral centre. This may also include a commitment to providing some elective paediatric orthopaedic services.
The trauma commitments include management of complex injuries, predominantly of the lower limb. Specifically, a proven background and expertise in treatment of complex periarticular fractures using Ilizarov/external fixation techniques is required. The post holder will also work alongside the existing orthoplastics team to provide comprehensive integrated care for patients with combined orthopaedic and soft tissue injuries. There is also an expectation to be an integral part of the wider trauma service including general, vascular, neuro and cardiothoracic surgical teams.
Elective responsibilities will focus on the delivery of tertiary referral limb reconstruction services that may include an element of paediatric care provision in the form of lower limb deformity correction. Elective services will be delivered at the DH site as well as the Trust’s off site elective orthopaedic centre in Orpington, Kent.
The role carries responsibility for the day to day management of elective and trauma and limb reconstruction patients on the wards. The department operates a 2 consultant weekend on call system. The post holder will contribute the ‘first on call’ rota on a regular basis (weekdays 1:12 and 1:12 weekends, Friday to Sunday).
An important aspect of the role is a contribution to King’s subspecialty training. The consultant will be expected to supervise, govern, cooperate with, instruct, teach doctors at SCF, SpR, JCF, SHO, F1/F2 level in their clinical work and audit activity of the unit. The Department is proactively involved with student teaching and regular student teaching is mandatory for the post holder.
To be eligible for interview you must be fully registered with the GMC, hold a Licence to Practice, and be on the Specialist Register.
