Southmead Hospital

Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine

Applications are invited for two posts in Intensive Care Medicine at one of Europe’s leading hospital sites at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. Applicants who wish to undertake partner specialty work in acute medicine or anaesthesia will be welcome.

North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest Trust in the South-West Region and hosts the busiest Intensive Care Unit in the Region. It provides a range of local and regional centres of excellence based on one hospital site. It provides medical, surgical, maternity and neonatal care for a population of almost a million people in the Bristol and South Gloucestershire and North Somerset area. It is also the Major Trauma Centre for the Severn Region, the Centre for the Regional Vascular Network, the Bristol Breast Care Centre and The Regional Centre for Neurosciences, Plastics and Burns, Renal and Transplant, Orthopaedics, Urology and Severn Pathology.

North Bristol Trust has also been the host Trust for the Nightingale Hospital, Bristol, and its clinicians have closely collaborated with other Units in its set-up.

The posts will be based in the purpose built 46 bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The postholder will have a dedicated ICU week and on-call responsibility to the ICU only. The successful applicants will join a team of 21 ICU Consultants, and more than 30 ICU trainees. The ICU sits within the wider anaesthetic department of more than 80 Consultants.

This is an exciting period for the Unit as it outlines its 5 year strategy and presses forward with service improvements including the introduction of a Clinical Information System. The plans also include continued collaboration with its local Units through the newly formed Severn Sub-Regional Network of hospitals, and also supporting the new Retrieve adult critical care transfer service.

Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine or be within six months of obtaining it by the interview date. If partner specialty work is to be undertaken then applicants will be required to be on the Specialist Register for that partner specialty. Full Registration with the GMC is essential. The successful candidate will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003.
