Applications are invited for a full time (10 PA) Consultant in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine to actively develop and enhance these services within Worcestershire. This is a new full time post and will complement the existing 2 Infectious Diseases consultants in the county.

It is envisaged that the post will provide an excellent opportunity to significantly build on the current service in Infectious Diseases with particular emphasis on providing a lead in the management of infections through our emergency departments of MAU/A&E and the further development of outpatient parenteral antibiotic services. We have recently had approval to enhance OPAT with funding to appoint a Nurse Practitioner based in the Acute Trust. There are well-developed outpatient services for HIV medicine (supported by 2x CNSs), hepatitis (supported by 1x CNS), tuberculosis, bone and joint infections and tropical medicine.

The Trust has three sites with in-patient Infectious diseases beds at Worcestershire Royal Hospital and clinics at Worcestershire Royal Hospital (WRH), Kidderminster Hospital Treatment Centre and the Alexandra Hospital (AH). This post will further facilitate a bacteraemia service and promote antibiotic stewardship on both acute sites (WRH and KH) through close liaison with our microbiologists.

General Internal Medicine for this post is based at WRH with a 1:6 consultant of the week rota.

The post holders will be offered a place on the on-call Consultant rota for the acute medical take.

There are close links with Birmingham and Warwick Universities with a regular cohort of medical students. The plans for development of The Three Counties Medical School at Worcester University further highlight teaching and academic opportunities. Should an appointee have a particularly strong pedigree in teaching or research then the Trust would be interested in modifying a job plan to take that into account. There are two ST3 trainees in Infection, one attached to Infectious Diseases and the other Microbiology.

Essential requirements include entry on the specialist register in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine Medicine (or entry expected within 6 months from date of interview) and clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCST in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine.

For further information please contact Dr Mark Roberts (Consultant lead in Infectious Diseases) or Dr Jasper Trevelyan (Divisional Medical Director), on 01562 513072.
