Job Details

We require a new Consultant Ortho-geriatrician to bring changes and drive forward an expanded role for Ortho-Geriatrics within the T&O department. This post is currently funded for 18 months, however, the expectation is that it would be made substantive and the department expanded in the future.

If you are a newly qualified Consultant or geriatric physician looking to a new challenge or if you are looking to have better, family friendly working hours this post would suit you.

We are a dynamic T&O department who is looking to expand to trauma care for elderly patients and develop new ways of coordinated care for these patients. You would be expected to develop new care pathways for coordinated care for these patients, working with Orthopaedic surgeons, Neurosurgeons and other physicians in addition to working collaboratively with patients, therapists and nurses to speed up and ease their hospital journey.

The Princess Royal University Hospital, part of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the major receiving hospital for hip fracture patients in south-east London. In addition, we expect to care for approximately 60-80 peri-prosthetic fractures and spinal fracture (elderly- non-operative) patients. With the recent appointment of three T&O surgeons with a particular interest in fragility L/L fractures, this department expects the team to produce QIP’s and procedures to make PRUH a beacon for Ortho-geriatric care.

You would work alongside the current Ortho-geriatrician and the established multi-professional team in the trauma unit at PRUH, with an aim to provide 7-days a week pre-op and post-op medical input for the care of elderly patients admitted to the Trauma unit. It is expected that the NHFD Best Practice Tariff would be taken up from the current 70% to the top decile of national performance.

You, along with your team would be expected to expand the current service to include the care of all elderly in-patients admitted to the Trauma unit at PRUH. These would include hip fractures, femoral fractures, peri-prosthetic fractures, (non-operative) spinal fractures and others that are admitted to the Trauma unit for non-operative conditions.

You are also expected to contribute to running out-patient and Community care in the form of Falls prevention, prevention of Fragility & Osteoporosis and other related matters.

You would be expected to enhance greater community based care for these elderly patients and minimise hospital stay by working with and developing appropriate services in conjunction with therapists, nurses and social workers.

The post does not have any on-call commitment, however there would be scheduled weekend work (mornings: pre-op work-up and ward rounds), currently proposed to be alternate Saturdays/ Sundays, with appropriate two-days off (Fri-Sat or Sun-Mon) as needed. There may be flexibility in re-arranging these requirements with the existing post-holder and with any future expansion of the service.

We are looking for applicants with a wide experience in geriatric medicine and care who also have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional skills to lead service developments in the Trust.
