Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics with a Special Interest in Spinal Surgery

It’s an exciting time to be joining the newly formed Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which has resulted from the merger of The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital and Bedford Hospital NHS Trusts on 1 April 2020. And the Luton site is undergoing a major redevelopment programme to include a new theatre unit comprising integrated theatres and futuristic equipment.

The hospital is a 660 bedded acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000.

The appointee will become part of a dynamic and enthusiastic team of 12 Orthopaedic Consultants delivering safe and effective care for trauma and orthopaedic patients from Bedfordshire and Luton with specialist interests in spinal, knee ligament reconstruction and joint replacements, upper limb and shoulder surgery and hand surgery. The appointee will run out patient orthopaedic clinics and theatre sessions and will be supported by Associate Specialist, Specialty Doctor, Senior Clinical Fellows, Specialty Trainees and Clinical Fellows. The appointee will be required to participate on the orthopaedic on-call rota.

The appointee will be encouraged and supported in developing their own specialty interests in spinal surgery within the overall job plan and to improve the pathway for spinal surgery patients.

The Hospital has always been renowned for its friendly atmosphere and good working relationships. The hospital has University status with UCL and the Royal Free, which provides an opportunity to strengthen our teaching and R&D programme and brings a more academic environment to the hospital. This department is fully committed to teaching and training both undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.

Luton & Dunstable Hospital is a busy University Teaching Hospital situated adjacent to Junction 11 of the M1 Motorway. There’s very good access to Central London by road or rail and the Midlands and the North via the M1 and A1.
