Consultant in Critical Care Medicine and Anaesthesia
Looking for a work-life balanced job with a family-feel in a beautiful part of the country? Applications are invited to join our forward-thinking, friendly department in Critical Care and Anaesthesia at Mid-Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will be based at Leighton Hospital in the leafy Cheshire countryside near Crewe; the area also benefits from excellent transport links to major cities and proximity to the Peak District and North Wales. We are a mid-sized department with a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit and Theatre complex built 6 years ago.
The Hospital is a Trauma Unit for the surrounding area, has a busy Emergency Department with varied admissions, a wide-range of medical in-patients, complex major surgery including colorectal, ENT and orthopaedics, paediatric emergencies and elective paediatric surgery and a thriving maternity unit. The Trust invests in its clinical leaders with New Consultant days, a dynamic Clinical Leadership Development Programme, and a mentorship programme. In addition the hospital runs regular Schwartz and grand rounds. Education roles are active within the Trust for training of Medical students, Foundation Doctors, Physician Associates and trainees in many specialties at core and specialty level making it a stimulating and interactive environment to work in. There is also an enthusiastic well-resourced simulation suite.
Many Consultants take on additional roles within the Trust and regionally. Within the department we have a Deputy Medical Director, Deputy Undergraduate Tutors, a Course Director for BASICS (the regional core trainee teaching programme), a Chair of a regional Critical Care Group and a Course Director for the regional obstetrics course (EASE) which is run at the Trust. Others have taken opportunities to get involved in anaesthetising for charities and to teach anaesthetists and nurses overseas for short periods of time.
The department forms part of the Health Education England NW (Mersey) training rotation and we have 10 anaesthetic/ACCS trainees from CT1 to ST3+ level. We also have 12 specialty doctors/clinical fellows, and are training Advanced Critical Care Practioners.
The Critical Care Unit has eleven commissioned beds with the ability to take up to 7 level 3 patients and during the COVID-19 pandemic these numbers significantly expanded. You will join a dedicated team of 8 Consultants in Critical Care and a total of 24 Consultants in both specialties. The post involves a 1:8 Consultant of the week role on Critical Care plus attendance at the weekly MDT meeting, where we have strong links with radiology, microbiology and the respiratory medical team as well as the wider allied health professional team. The outreach team has recently expanded as a 24/7 service led by a band 8 senior nurse and supported by the consultant body. There is also a monthly follow-up clinic, journal club and liaison meetings with the Emergency Department. The Unit has been actively involved in recruitment for trials including, most recently, the Recovery-RS trial.
The successful applicant will also contribute to the Critical Care Consultant on-call rota on a 1:8 basis and a range of elective theatre work will be agreed on appointment. The post comes with 2.0 SPA sessions per week (based on 10 PAs), and candidates interests in governance, education, quality improvement or research will be sought out for the departments’ and candidates further development.
Applicants must have full registration with the GMC including a License to Practice, and be on the Specialist Register (or be within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training). The post is offered on a full-time basis; however, the Trust would welcome discussion with individuals looking for a more flexible working pattern to support a different work life balance.
