Applications are invited for the posts of Consultant Physicians in Respiratory and General Medicine. One post is a replacement post, and the other is a new post to expand integrated care and general respiratory services. The successful applicants would be joining the ten Chest Physicians working at two acute sites City Hospital in Birmingham and Sandwell Hospital in West Bromwich.

The Respiratory Unit within the Trust has a designated respiratory hub located on the City site, two sophisticated Pulmonary Function Laboratories that are managed from the City site, and well equipped Endoscopy Suites. EBUS and medical thoracoscopy are carried out, and there is an established pleural and home NIV service. Our hospital is an integrated care organisation and involved in the Royal College of Physicians Future Hospital Project. There are supporting junior medical staff, specialist nurses for inpatient respiratory care, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, and TB, and a dedicated respiratory general manager. The post is likely to include cross site working. There would be opportunities to develop and expand specialty interests. All interests could be considered, including COPD, cough, breathlessness, non-invasive ventilation, bronchiectasis, acute portal respiratory work and integrated care. One of the posts would have an integrated care focus following a successful funding application with the CCG to deliver expanded respiratory integrated care work. If the applicant requests, there may the opportunity to work sessions on the acute medical unit and drive the interface between respiratory medicine and AMU.

The Trust has a very good reputation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with strong links to the University of Birmingham and Health Education West Midlands. The Trust is home to a number of University departments that are involved in active research. The applicant will be expected to be involved in education and supervision of medical students and junior doctors.

We serve an ethnically diverse population, with a wide range of respiratory disease and deliver a comprehensive service that allows for subspecalisation in many aspects of respiratory medicine. There are strong links with community respiratory services, and these are planned to develop further.
