Bronglais General Hospital

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Consultant Physician to join us at Bronglais General Hospital, Aberystwyth. This is a replacement post and you will join colleagues in a very dynamic and forward thinking Acute Medicine team. Any areas of specialist interest will be encouraged and supported.

Bronglais General Hospital is situated in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion in the northern part of Mid Wales. It is one of four acute care providers within Hywel Dda University Health Board, but is 60 miles away from the next nearest acute hospital, both to the north and south. Bronglais Hospital serves a population that is proportionally transient all year round – we are close to Aberystwyth University and the younger population rely on Bronglais Hospital during term time, but in the summer months the older/frail population can significantly increase due to holiday makers in the area – in particular those who take up temporary residence in local caravan parks. Thus the profile for Bronglais Hospital changes, but we do not really have a quiet time.

Bronglais Hospital may be the smallest District General Hospital in the UK, but its teams, services and departments have achieved excellence in their respective fields of care:

  • The best heart failure outcomes in Wales
  • Best fractured neck of femur survival in the UK
  • Only consultant delivered anaesthetic service in Wales
  • Fastest time to CT scan in Wales and one of the highest thrombolysis rate for stroke in UK
  • First fracture liaison service in Wales
  • Best emergency laparotomy outcomes in Wales

The services at Bronglais Hospital enable staff to provide 24/7 emergency care backed up with appropriate medical specialities and surgical (general and trauma) support on site. Bronglais Hospital also has strong links with regional centres for expert support and advice and hosts visiting services from within Hywel Dda Health Board and wider afield.

The county of Ceredigion has a well-established and robust community nursing team and Critical Response Team, which is due to be enhanced in 2019, but no community hospital as our remaining small facility in Tregaron is due to close. We do have both nursing and residential care homes in the area with the majority in the third sector.

40% of the demand for care comes from other Health Boards over the border in Powys (Powys teaching Health Board) which has two community hospitals which have direct and regular links with Bronglais General Hospital and South Gwynedd (Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board) which also has two community hospitals.
