Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine with a subspecialty interest in Neurosciences and Trauma Intensive Care Medicine, with or without sessional commitment to anaesthesia and perioperative medicine, based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

Addenbrooke’s Hospital is the Major Trauma Centre for the East of England, serving a population of around 6.4 million people. This thriving, modern teaching hospital is the local hospital for people living in the Cambridge area and is the regional referral centre for a number of specialties, including neurosurgery, cancer surgery, transplantation, plastic surgery, vascular and paediatrics. Addenbrooke’s offers unparalleled capacity for teaching, including involvement in the high fidelity simulation centre, and research within the department as well as the wider biomedical campus.

Successful candidates will be leading the care provided by the multidisciplinary team of the Neurosciences and Trauma Critical Care Unit (NCCU). NCCU is an expanding critical care unit (currently 27 beds and approximately 1000 admissions per year) providing critical care to victims of major trauma and to patients with complex neurosurgical and neurological disease. NCCU medical establishment consists of 15 consultants, 24 junior doctors, 2 foundation doctors, and 2 advanced critical care practitioners.

Provisional job plans are designed for candidates with a dual specialisation in intensive care medicine and anaesthesia. Candidates with a single specialty in intensive care medicine (or with a second specialty other than Anaesthesia) will also be considered for the intensive care (NCCU) component of the post.

Applicants should be fully registered with the GMC, have a CCT in Intensive Care Medicine or be within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview, and evidence of recent clinical experience necessary to fulfil all aspects of the job plan. The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in Good Medical Practice (GMC, 2013).
