Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant Hand Surgeon

Applications are invited for a substantive Consultant specialising in hand surgery to join the Trauma and Orthopaedics at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, Guildford.This post represents an exciting opportunity to work in a busy District General Hospital which provides a wide range of elective orthopaedic services.

We are ideally looking for a candidate with the BSSH Diploma in Hand Surgery

Candidates will need to show evidence of specialist training in Hand surgery which would include at least one senior Hand fellowship at an institute of eminence recognised by BSSH/ FESSH. The fellowship period should be a minimum of 1 year in the speciality, covering both elective and trauma services within the program.

It is desirable that the selected candidate will increase the skill mix within the current unit. The candidate must also be able to demonstrate specialist knowledge and experience of treating hand conditions, both elective and trauma. The candidate will be expected to be able to demonstrate an interest and appropriate training in general trauma.

The Department, entirely sited at the Royal Surrey, has two wards, Bramshott and Ewhurst Ward. Day Surgery is performed in a dedicated NHS facility within the confines of the Guildford Nuffield Hospital. Three operating theatres with laminar flow and a plaster room are dedicated to Orthopaedics and Trauma. The new Musculoskeletal (MSk) service, together with Orthopaedic and Fracture Clinics are held in a self-contained outpatient unit in close proximity to A&E and the Radiology department.

The Royal Surrey has the most active Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit in the UK in which Orthopaedics is taking an increasing role and courses are run in conjunction with the Royal College of Surgeons.

There are full supporting services in the departments of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. The department of Orthopaedics has two Trauma Nurse Co-ordinators and an Elective Nurse Co-ordinator. Pre-assessment clinics for elective inpatients are held in the department. The department is in the forefront of day case surgery and day surgery cases are pre-assessed in the Day Unit.
