Stroke Specialty Doctor

Based Royal Gwent Hospital and Grange University Hospital

 Full Time (10 Sessions)

Plus 1 additional session

We are seeking interested doctors to work as a Specialty Doctor in our stroke unit at Royal Gwent Hospital and at the newly built Grange University Hospital.

Aneurin Bevan Health Board is one of seven acute Local Health Boards in Wales. It provides acute, community and mental healthcare services to more than 600,000 people living in South East Wales, and is one of the largest and busiest NHS health boards/Trusts the UK. Currently, it is responsible for delivering services through its centre of specialist and critical care at newly build Grange University Hospital and three other acute hospitals in Newport, Abergavenny and Ystrad Mynach, supported by nineteen community hospitals, health centres and extensive mental health and learning disabilities facilities. In the near future, from November 2020, the newly built Grange University Hospital will provide specialist and critical care including hyper acute stroke care. The three local General Hospitals will provide care to patients who do not require surgery, specialist care or intensive care support.

This post has become available after the Health Board opened the newly built Grange University Hospital and moved the stroke rehabilitation ward from St Woolos hospital to Royal Gwent hospital. The new stroke model will be the centre of  specialist and critical care and will be part of the existing new stroke service redesign programme (SSRP), started in 2016 which involves centralisation of a 7 day hyper-acute stroke service. The post is within the department of Stroke medicine. The post is open to anyone with stroke interest. This post will be based at the royal Gwent hospital where the post holder will be involved in step down care of stroke patients after their initial management in the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit based at Grange University Hospital.

The post holder will participate weekend on call at Grange University Hospital where post holder will do the assessment of stroke patients needing comprehensive Hyper Acute care including stroke Thrombolysis, Stroke Thrombectomy. The post holder also have commitment of ongoing managing stroke patients in Hyper Acute stroke unit (HASU). The post holder will also be encouraged to participate out of hours on call after successful assessment and will be provide supervised training to achieve the skills. The post holder will be given the opportunity to receive training if needed to manage the hyper acute stroke patients at Grange University Hospital

The post holder should be dynamic, enthusiastic who will contribute to the provision and development of high quality stroke care for our population.

This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:
