Full-Time – 10 PA's x 1 Post – Consultants Anaesthetist (Substantive)

University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust is looking to recruit a full-time Consultant Anaesthetist to fill a vacancy caused by leave/illness. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and expanding group of general anaesthetists providing care across a broad range of specialties. These specialties include obstetrics, bariatric and vascular surgery. UHNM is a centre of excellence, a regional cancer centre and major trauma centre. There are two main hospital sites, the Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital.

The Trust is a progressive and ambitious organisation providing a full range of general acute hospital services for approximately half a million people living in and around North and Mid Staffordshire. The Trust also provides specialised services for three million people in a wider area, including neighbouring counties and North Wales. In 2012, UHNM became a Major Trauma Centre, serving a population of 2.5 million in the North West Midlands (Staffordshire, Shropshire and South Cheshire) and North Wales. In the same year, the hospital completed the £370 million complex that brought all acute specialties (including neurosurgery, spinal surgery and cardiothoracic surgery) onto a single site. Facilities in UHNM include a new emergency department, 35 operating theatres, 2 interventional radiology suites with a third planned, 62 adult critical care beds and an 8-bedded paediatric intensive care unit.

UHNM has a thriving undergraduate medical school based in Keele University 3 miles away. Keele University Medical School has trained around 130 students in each of its five years of the Keele MB ChB course. The first graduates from this course started work at University Hospital in August 2012. This year the School achieved a very high rating in the National Student Survey in 2014, 2015 and 2016, being placed joint first amongst Medical Schools in the UK.

The Anaesthetic Department has 70 WTE consultant posts, 6 associate specialists, 9 specialty doctors and 47 doctors in training. The Stoke School of Anaesthesia has a very good educational record and the strong links with Keele University provide good research opportunities.

The hospital is situated on the western edge of the conurbation of Stoke-on-Trent, close to rural Shropshire and Cheshire. It is within 13 miles of the Peak District National Park. There are excellent links by road (M6 within 2 miles), rail (London within 1½ hours) and air (Manchester and Birmingham International Airports within 45 minutes).
