Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Acute Medicine at Morriston Hospital, Swansea Bay University Health Board.

Morriston Hospital is a 750 bedded teaching hospital and a tertiary referral centre with a busy Emergency Department, medical intake and ITU. It houses the regional Neurology and Nephrology units for West Wales plus a regional Cardiothoracic unit. It also the home of the Welsh National Burns and Plastics Unit.

Morriston Hospital has expanded considerably in recent years with brand new outpatient and clinical accommodation buildings and planning is well under way for further new clinical and academic buildings on site.  This is an exciting time to join the Health Board and the Hospital as we look to enact our innovative clinical services plan, modernising healthcare provision for our city and region.

These are replacement posts joining a dynamic team of 7 consultants in the acute medical admissions unit, providing high quality acute care to our local population of 390,000. The acute care physicians are based in a 40 bedded medical assessment unit and contribute to a recently developed ambulatory emergency assessment service, with exciting transformational plans for a future operating model for AMAU progressing at pace. Successful candidates would have the opportunity to help mould and develop the acute medicine service to allow it to flourish for the next decade and beyond.

Swansea, Wales’ beautiful second city and its stunning neighbor the Gower Peninsula, is a wonderful place to live.  A seaside city with a university ranking among the top UK 12 for many disciplines, it has all the cultural and business attributes one would expect, as well as a flourishing top flight sports scene.

Accommodation options could include living on the Gower, with blue flag beaches close to your door, perfect for summer days in the sun or all year round surfing, in the beautiful Swansea Valley, close to the mountains bordering the Brecon Beacons National Park, or alternatively in the chic SA1 Maritime Quarter.  With Pembrokeshire National Park and the thriving city of Cardiff on our doorstep it is the perfect place to have a real work / life balance. There is a wide choice of high quality state and private schooling in the area. There are also excellent links to Cardiff and beyond both via rail and the M4 motorway, with London only 3 hours away by train

The successful candidate will also have the option to include up to 3 sessions in the medical specialty of their choice in their job plan. These could include Renal medicine, Care of the elderly, Stroke medicine, Gastroenterology, Respiratory medicine or Diabetes and Endocrinology.

The Health Board has a strong commitment to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students from both Swansea and Cardiff University. These posts would be ideal for candidates completing their specialist training or those with other specialist interests who wish to diversify. Several departments have strong links with Swansea Medical School and has an excellent track record in research. Additional academic sessions will be considered including joint appointments with the university; we strongly support such posts and where appropriate will facilitate discussions with the Swansea University Medical School.

Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons to work whole time will be eligible for consideration for the post. If such an appointment is made, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis.

Applicants must be fully registered on the GMC Specialist Register with a Licence to practise, or anticipated CCT within 6 months of the interview date.
