Acorns children’s Hospices and Birmingham Women’s and Children’s (BWCH) Foundation Trust share the same vision in that ‘Every baby, child and Young Person living in our region who is life-limited or life-threatened, and their families will receive the specialist support they need’. This is an exciting and innovative post which will work across the two organisations, the successful candidate will form part of the successful team of consultants within BWCH and wider group of palliative care consultants across the West Midlands area. The post holder will also provide medical leadership and a Consultant led service promoting close collaboration between clinical care, teaching and governance of palliative care delivered by Acorns.

About the post: This post is designed as a 10 PA post and will be split between Acorns (4 PAs), BWCH (4 PAs) with a flexible 2 PAs depending on clinical need. The post is funded directly from charitable sources thanks to the collaboration between the NHS Foundation Trust and Acorns Children’s Hospice Trust.

In BWCH, the successful candidate will deliver symptom control and paediatric palliative medicine to the increasing numbers of children with life-limiting conditions cared for by the wide variety of specialist teams delivering secondary, tertiary and quaternary services. The post-holder will work with the existing Consultant in Paediatric Palliative Medicine and the lead nurse for Palliative and Bereavement care supporting and providing leadership to an existing team of 2.6 WTE band 7 nurses currently delivering a palliative care service within BWCH to children with malignant and non-malignant diagnoses.

Within Acorns the successful candidate will lead on the delivery of specialist palliative care either in person or through support of nursing staff and GPs. It is hoped that over time the appointee will increase the amount of specialist clinical activity occurring within the hospices and in this regard a degree of flexible working will be required to support children and families moving between hospital and hospice provision.

Acorns works across the whole of the West Midlands region and it is expected that the appointee will provide leadership in the provision of specialist paediatric palliative care across the region.
