Based at Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny and Grange University Hospital, SE Wales

Full Time (10 Sessions)

Plus 1 Additional Temporary Sessions

This is an exciting opportunity to join the stroke department at the newly built Grange University Hospital which will be the centre of specialist and critical care.

This consultant post will support the hyper acute service at the University Grange Hospital and the following step down care for rehabilitation at local general hospital at Nevill Hall Hospital.

 Aneurin Bevan Health Board is one of seven acute Local Health Boards in Wales.

It provides acute, community and mental healthcare services to more than 600,000 people living in South East Wales, and is one of the largest and busiest NHS health boards/Trusts the UK. Currently, it is responsible for delivering services through its centre of specialist and critical care at the newly built Grange University Hospital and three other acute hospitals in Newport, Abergavenny and Ystrad Mynach, supported by community hospitals, health centres and extensive mental health and learning disabilities facilities.

In the near future, from November 2020, the newly built Grange University Hospital will provide specialist and critical care including hyper acute stroke care. The three local General Hospitals will provide care to patients who do not require surgery, specialist care or intensive care support.

 This post has become available to support the Health Board opening the newly built Grange University Hospital which will be the centre of specialist and critical care and will be part of an existing new stroke service redesign programme (SSRP), started in 2016 which involves centralisation of a 7 day hyper-acute stroke service.

The post holder will be based at the Grange University Hospital and Nevill Hall Hospital encompassing and will be involved in:

 Comprehensive care of stroke patients including stroke Thrombolysis,

  • Commitment of acute and rehabilitation stroke unit, HASU and TIA clinics
  • Acute inpatient assessment and treatment of stroke and general medicine patients admitted to the stroke ward
  • Delivering Outpatient clinics
  • Providing cover for community hospitals
  • Supporting the training of medical staff, nurses and other members of the MDT
  • Providing effective leadership to multidisciplinary staff members
  • Develop teaching and research within the organisation

You should be dynamic, enthusiastic consultant who will contribute to the provision and development of high quality stroke care for our population.

 The Health Board actively supports consultant doctors to undertake funded 3 month formal sabbaticals through an annual application process.

This position involves Regulated Activity with adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:

  • Enhanced check without barred list - an adults and children’s barred list check

Applicants must hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC and you should have MRCP.

Candidates for Consultant posts must also be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR(CP) date within 6 months of interview.
