The Havens are London’s Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) based in Camberwell, Paddington and Whitechapel. We have a strong partnership with the Metropolitan Police Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command.
We provide expertise in the care of survivors of rape and serious sexual assault who either self-refer or are referred via the police or other agencies. This care includes including, forensic medical examination and medico-legal work, safeguarding, sexual health, counselling, psychology, advocacy and other specialist support.
The Havens’ Children and Young People’s service (CYPHavens) supports children and adolescents when there are recent concerns about sexual assault/abuse.
April 2013 saw the three Havens come together under Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as one service delivered on three sites. The Havens service is jointly commissioned between NHS England and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime and is the largest SARC in the UK.
The major responsibility of the post-holder will be to carry out forensic medical examinations on survivors of sexual assault, some of whom may be very traumatised. They will also deliver follow-up sexual health and review clinics. Forensic medical examinations must be carried out in a manner which minimises further distress. The majority of our clients are women and for this reason this post is open to female applicants only in order to preserve privacy and dignity as covered by the Equality Act 2010 Part 1 Schedule 9.
These are detailed, lengthy examinations, which must meet strict standards in terms of recording information, sample collection and handling, and avoiding DNA contamination.
Subsequently a witness statement is requested by the police for approximately a third of examinations and the post-holder will be required to attend court to give evidence in about 10% of cases
The role will suit those with experience in Primary Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Genitourinary Medicine and Sexual Health, or Emergency Medicine. The fixed term post would be attractive as an OOPE to a trainee in one of these specialities.
The post will be based primarily at Haven Camberwell but the post holder must be willing to work at other sites according to the needs of the service.
Start date ASAP. Requests for a job share will be considered.
