Clinical Futures is Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s exciting programme of work to change the way NHS care and services are delivered across the Gwent area, centralising and promoting services in or closer to the home, along with high quality hospital services available when needed.  As part of this journey, we will shortly be opening our brand new £350m, 462 bed purpose built Specialist and Critical Care Centre at The Grange University Hospital

We have a full time vacancy for a Consultant in Anaesthetics, with an interest in Intensive Care Medicine, with potential for sessions in pre-hospital emergency medicine with EMRTS Cymru for interested candidates.  This post is based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport.

The critical care service performs a multi-functional role covering all hospital specialities. An outreach service runs during 12 hours a day, 7 days a week –moving to a 24hr cover model. The Intensive care unit offers Step 1 and 2 FICM training as well as FICE and lung ultrasound FUSIC mentoring. We have a broad research programme, with dedicated research nurses. The new state of the art critical care unit comprises 24 L3 equivalent beds with planned expansion to 30 over the next 2 years. The unit will be paperless using ASCOM eICU platform.

The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) Cymru is an exciting service for Wales that provides Consultant and Critical Care Practitioner-delivered pre-hospital critical care and critical care transfer and retrieval across Wales. It is a partnership between Wales Air Ambulance Charity, Welsh Government and NHS Wales. We provide advanced decision making and critical care for life or limb-threatening emergencies that require transfer for time critical specialist treatment at an appropriate facility.

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board provide an anaesthetic service for both elective and emergency theatre lists in more than 30 theatres across sites. As well as undertaking elective theatre lists, anaesthetists provide 24 hour cover for emergency surgery, trauma and obstetrics. They also participate in resuscitation training and the cardiac arrest team. Total deliveries on the labour wards are around 6700 per year supported by elective lists and an epidural service.

Staff wellbeing is one of the Health Board’s priorities, with a comprehensive package of support and development opportunities available to all. The health board considers staff wellbeing to be of paramount importance and it is a key driver of job development.

We take great pride in being a friendly multidisciplinary unit. 50% of the consultants are female and we are flexible in job planning to maintain a work:life balance particularly for those with young children. The Grange University hospital is situated close to the Brecon Beacons national park, an IDA International Dark sky reserve with access to peerless walking and outdoor pursuits. We are also within commuting distance of the vibrant metropolitan centres of Bristol and Cardiff

We have close ties to Cardiff medical school and offer opportunities to develop roles in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. We will consider applicants with joint CCTs in both ICM and ED/Anaesthesia and can offer customised job plans including PHEM EMRTs sessions. LTFT and job shares can also be considered.

The Health Board actively supports consultant doctors to undertake funded 3 month formal sabbaticals through an annual application process.
