The Department of Urology at King’s College Health Partners is split over three main sites: The Princess Royal University Hospital in Bromley, King’s College Hospital at Denmark Hill, and outpatient services at Beckenham Beacon in Beckenham. Our vision for the urology service is to deliver a seamless patient pathway, provided across these sites with plans to continue with collaborative work.  Our outpatient’s unit, based at Beckenham Beacon will continue to be invested in and develop as a state-of-the-art dedicated urology diagnostic hub for the Trust and more widely, South-East London Cancer with specialist, one-stop cancer and local anaesthetic (LA) TP prostate biopsy services. The post-holder will undertake a combination of outpatient sessions and operating lists across The Princess Royal University Hospital sites and be expected to take an active role in research and development. All Consultants are encouraged to participate in the teaching programs within the Department as well as participation in clinical audit and governance.

Applicants should have a comprehensive experience and training in Urology. They should be competent in all aspects of core urology. The new appointee should be willing and able to develop an interest to complement the needs of the service.

This Job will focus on Core Urology, Cancer Diagnostics and encourage development of a sub-specialty interest in superficial bladder cancer and Green Light Laser PVP for Bladder outlet obstruction.

Dedicated Urology 10 beds based at PRUH

Urology investigations suite at Beckenham Beacon Flexible cystoscopy with NBI technology, LA TP biopsy, TRUS volume, flow rate and TWOC clinics and Urodynamics

This is a full-time post (10 Programmed Activities of which 1.5 SPA and 1.5 PA for on-calls) with additional programmed activities available subject to negotiation with the successful candidate. Applicants should have a broad experience of Urological Surgery and must be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of eligibility for inclusion. 

The appointed Urology surgeon will join a friendly and supportive team that works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team at the Princess Royal University Hospital. There may be opportunities for cross-site working between Denmark Hill site and the South sites, subject to agreement and needs.

The post holder will participate in a 1:6 On-call Rota based at The Princess Royal University Hospital where the emergency and operative workloads are centered. All the outpatient services including LA TP biopsies and flexible cystoscopies are based at Beckenham Beacon. There is interventional radiology cover with a nephrostomy service available at The Princess Royal Hospital. There may be an opportunity for cross site work with the Denmark Hill site as a part of our collaborative work and there may be the possibility of a 1:12 merged on-call Rota in the future, covering the Denmark Hill and Princess Royal sites at nights and weekends.  

The successful applicant will join a team comprising a total of 6 Consultants, 7 middle Grades, 3 Trust SHO’s, 1 Core Trainee and 3 FY1 doctors. Out-of-hours cover is provided by 24/7 middle grade cover supported by a shared SHO Rota with ENT out-of-hours. We also have two dedicated oncology Clinical Nurse Specialists. We aim to continue to provide a Consultant-Delivered service across the broad range of urological disease and to meet the separate elements of the 18-week and 2WW pathway targets.

The Princess Royal University Hospital and Beckenham Beacon are rewarding places to work. Four recently appointed Urology Consultants have been recruited in the last 12 months, each developing their own subspecialty interests. We offer the successful applicant to develop interests to complement the existing experience within the Department in particular with superficial bladder cancer, cancer diagnostics and the surgical management of BPH with Greenlight Laser prostate surgery which is desirable. You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a Licence to Practice and be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of attaining your CCT or equivalent to be eligible for interview.

The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable adults and/or children (0-18 years), therefore this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, and as such, it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
