Consultant Geriatrician with Special Interest in Acute Geriatrics

At the Royal Gwent Hospital we’re really setting the pace in our elderly care services by investing in new servicies to address the acute clinical problems and needs of our older patients.
This substantive consultant post will be based in the Elderly Frail Unit (EFU) alongside 7 Consultant Geriatricians working within the Royal Gwent Hospital. The unit is designed and supported with a team of; Clinical Nurse Specialists, Non Training and Training grade doctors, Therapists and Pharmacist. The team work together in a multi-disciplinary fashion in order to generate better outcomes for our patients. With a large elderly population we have seen a constant demand for the Elderly Frail Unit via our emergency departments. The planned developments will see improved partnership working with our primary care and community partners to reduce hospital admissions in the first place. Our services will be developed using best practice principals with regard to acute medical care of older people.
The Elderly Frail Unit although an established model is constantly looking for ways to improve the patient experience, so the ideal candidate can have a key role to play in shaping this service joining our existing team for elderly services comprising experienced geriatricians, discharge co-ordinators, nursing staff, and rehab staff all of whom are dedicated to provide good quality patient care. The role of geriatricians and other professionals who specialise in care of older people is crucial in implementing best practice in terms of leadership, education and training.
The Health Board actively supports consultant doctors to undertake funded 3 month formal sabbaticals through an annual application process.

This position involves Regulated Activity with adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:

Applicants must hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.
Candidates for Consultant posts must also be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR(CP) date within 6 months of interview.
