Consultant Microbiologist (Infection Control Doctor), Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford
An exciting opportunity exists for a Consultant Microbiologist to join the team within Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services. You will be based at Royal Surrey County Hospital, providing comprehensive microbiology and infection control services to the Trust and community users in the catchment area along with two other consultant colleagues.
Laboratory facilities are based at two sites. At Frimley Park Hospital there is an extended laboratory on the ground floor with a full range of microbiological investigations, including routine culture, mycobacteriology, mycology and parasitology. Virology laboratory facilities are at St. Peter’s Hospital and include molecular diagnostics and serology. We are committed to exploring new ways of working and have Kiestra and MALDI-TOF. The laboratory has full UKAS accreditation.
The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust NHS Foundation Trust is a leading modern general hospital and specialist centre for cancer services and treatment, based in Guildford.
The Royal Surrey County Hospital serves a population of 1.2 million people for cancer services and 320,000 for emergency and general hospital services, mainly from West Surrey and bordering Hampshire and Sussex. As part of the Trust, nearby Milford Hospital and Haslemere hospital host rehabilitation beds.
The hospital has an annual income of more than £200 million and employs around 3,000 people. In particular, there have been a number of recent additional consultant appointments bringing the total number of consultants employed to 143. Every year the RSCH sees around 215,000 outpatients, admits 58,500 patients for treatment and 72,000 patients attend our A & E department. The Trust is also a centre of excellence and training for minimal access surgery and regional hub for ENT and pathology services. We were licensed as an NHS Foundation Trust on 1st December 2009 and our vision for the future is to continue to develop both as a modern hospital and as a cancer centre. You will hold the new consultant contract with 11 Programmed Activities and the job plan will be reviewed after six months. The post currently involves 1 in 6.5 on-call cover attracting an 5% on-call supplement.
The postholder must be a registered medical practitioner and on the Specialist register of the GMC or be eligible on the specialist register within six months of the date of the Advisory Appointment Committee. The post is ideally suited to applicants with microbiology training or microbiology/infectious diseases joint training.
