This post provides an opportunity to combine general anaesthesia with a specialist interest in Perioperative Medicine in an award winning small hospital covering a large geographical area between the Yorkshire Dales and Bradford. A breakdown of the draft job plan for the post is included in the information pack. A wide range of general experience in Anaesthetics and Obstetrics is essential.

The department uses CLWrota to track working sessions and annual leave giving excellent flexibility and enabling genuine and sustainable work–life balance. Within easy reach of the hospital are the spectacular Yorkshire Dales, and the local towns of Skipton and Ilkley which offer outstanding schools, superb leisure and cultural facilities, and good transport links to the cosmopolitan centres of Leeds, Bradford and Manchester.

The successful applicant will join a team of enthusiastic anaesthetists who can offer expertise and training in Critical Care, leadership and sustainability, quality improvement and regional anaesthesia. The department has recently been awarded Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) having been commended by ACSA in many aspects including team communication, simulation training and Specialty Doctor career development.

This is a dynamic department and the successful applicant will be required to contribute to ongoing service development. We expect involvement in our existing quality improvement projects and also welcome ideas for new work streams. We strongly encourage leadership development. There is a trust leadership programme in place and study leave is encouraged for this. We also believe in maintaining work life balance. The department has a programme of social events and the Yorkshire Dales is in an area of outstanding natural beauty with many outdoor activities available.

Many of the consultants either hold or have held trust and external, education and leadership positions, and Airedale is well represented at national and international conferences and events with Consultants and trainees presenting their work. Consequently Airedale anaesthetic department is scored consistently highly on trainee surveys.

At the start of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the department successfully split the Consultant on call rota in line with GPICS staffing requirements for Critical Care; however we have now reverted to a 1:15 general on call rota pending on-going substantive recruitment. There is therefore the option of the successful applicant supporting the 1:16 General on call rota including Critical Care or joining an anaesthesia/Obstetrics on call rota with an anticipated frequency of 1:9. A new theatre build is underway for 2020-2021, with funding agreed to further expand the Consultant body to 20 WTE.
