Northland District Health Board, New Zealand

Northland District Health Board advocates for affirmative action and actively seeks Māori into our workforce to reflect the community we serve.

Based at Whangarei Hospital, New Zealand, this position for a Specialist Physician in Geriatric medicine is part of a service which provides health care for Older People across Northland. The region covers an area of 12,600 square kilometres with a population of 170,000.

We are currently developing and expanding our service to meet the needs of the rapidly growing older population of Northland which includes over 30,000 people aged 65 years or over. As the successful applicant you will be part of a team of five Consultant Geriatricians.

The role is based at Whangarei Hospital which is a 250-bed district hospital with all major specialities. We have a 24-bed Assessment and Rehabilitation ward which also includes a 6-8 bed Acute Stroke Unit. We provide visiting outpatient clinics on five sites across Northland.

The service is well supported by community rehabilitation teams, a region-wide needs assessment service and Gerontology nurse specialists.  We are currently developing our frailty services including a "front door" frailty ACE (Acute Care of the Elderly) programme alongside early supported discharge and increasing our rehabilitation offering in outlying community hospitals.

Other areas of development include improving our interface with primary care and community services.  Any subspecialty interests are welcome and will be encouraged e.g orthogeriatrics, continence and movement disorders.

Known as the "winterless north", Northland offers great access to sailing, surfing and numerous outdoor pursuits set amongst native bush and beautiful scenery in a warm, sub-tropical climate.

All applicants should be eligible or able to achieve eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
