Position of Resident Specialist in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
(the local equivalent of a fully independent specialist)
Mater Dei Hospital is a 1000 bed tertiary teaching hospital, serving a population of about 700,000. The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care has a complement of 35 consultant (attending) anaesthetists, 44 specialists and 21 trainees. Being the main public acute health facility on the island, MDH offers all major surgical and medical specialties and hence the anaesthesia, sedation and resuscitation services that these entail. There is a busy 20 bedded Intensive Care Unit staffed by anaesthetists and a 6 bedded Cardiac Intensive CareUnit is also supported. The Obstetric unit (c. 4500 deliveries per annum) is provided with a 24 hour epidural service. The department boasts an array of modern equipment including readily available videolaryngoscopes and ultrasound and echocardiography machines. The department also boasts a comprehensive UEMS accredited training programme in Anaesthesiology.
The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care would like to further strengthen its clinical team, and is inviting applications for the position of specialist in anaesthesia(please note that this is not a training post),on a full time basis. This position is for a twelve (12) month assignment, which may be renewed for further periods.Prospective applicants should be capable of working independently in the operating theatres, Intensive Care Unit, Medical Imaging Department, Obstetric Unit and Endoscopy unit. Experience in adult cardiothoracic and paediatric anaesthesia as well as Chronic Pain management will be considered an asset. The prospective candidates may choose between two types of job plans with a minimum of 48 hours worked per week. Applicants will also be expected to join the resident on call rota at an estimated frequency of 1:4. Indicative remuneration would be in the region of Euro 80,000 (gross) per annum. Opportunities for additional sessions, with attractive reimbursement rates may also be available for the right candidate. These may include working at the Gozo General Hospital on the sister island of Gozo.
