Applications are invited for the Post of Consultant in Medical Microbiology or Infectious Diseases at South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. This is a full-time 10 PA Post.

You will join a team of five existing Microbiologists providing infection liaison, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control activities to the Trust and surrounding general practitioners. The Post will be based at Sunderland Royal Hospital but you will be expected to work at South Tyneside District Hospital from time-to-time. Laboratory services are provided from a state-of-the art laboratory at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust with which the Microbiologists work closely.

You will contribute to a clinical on-call rota covering the South of Tyne area between 5pm and 9am (between 1-in-9 and 1-in-10 evenings and nights), and to an on-site weekend/Bank Holiday rota between 9am and 5pm (1-in-5 weekends and Bank Holidays).

For the successful candidate the Department will make all efforts to accommodate particular clinical interests and/or requests for flexible working.

The Microbiologists make full use of the Trust’s up-to-date and fullyintegrated electronic medical record with electronic prescribing, both of which are important tools for microbiology liaison and antimicrobial stewardship.

You must be clinically-orientated, flexible and willing to work as part of a team. You must be on the GMC Specialist Register in Medical Microbiology and/or Infectious Diseases, or must be within six months of attaining Specialist Registration at the time of interview.

Experience of working in Medical Microbiology in the United Kingdom is desirable, as is a post-graduate qualification based on clinical experience (e.g. MRCP) or research (e.g. MD).
