Applications are invited for the permanent post of Consultant Ophthalmologist Lead for Eye Casualty
This is permanent replacement post which will enhance the current establishment of NHS and academic staff of the Department of Ophthalmology. The successful appointee will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical audit. They will be required to undertake management duties and work in a multidisciplinary team.
The post holder will act as the lead consultant for the UHL eye emergency department at Leicester and will be expected to manage the clinical workload and develop the emergency department both through support and training of staff (nursing, optometric and junior doctors) and through strategic innovation and transformation to continue to provide ‘caring at its best’ for people with emergency eye conditions.
The post holder will update and improve departmental guidelines, improve process with the management team and operational policies, this will also include delivering the emergency care in a timely manner working with the management team to achieve and maintain patient flow safely. The post holder will coordinate and support the delivery of training and be able to challenge if needed but seek to strengthen relationships with local community clinicians and optometrists and ensure quality standards are maintained across the emergency eye care. Please be aware the ophthalmology department does function on a 3 session day basis.
The appointee will have a principle interest in eye casualty and emergency eye care and she/he will be expected to contribute to the general Ophthalmology service on the Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) site and associated community hospitals. Participation on the on call rota is essential.
The appointee will join an active and enthusiastic team of 23 Ophthalmologists, both generalist and sub-specialist Ophthalmology services are provided within the UHL.
The Ophthalmology Service in UHL is currently provided by 23 Consultants, specialising in the areas of Medical retina, Uveitis, Oculoplastics, Lacrimal, Cornea, Glaucoma, Vitreoretinal surgery, Neuro Ophthalmology and Paediatric Ophthalmology.
Applicants must already be on the GMC specialist register or within 6 months of the interview date have a certificate of completion of specialist training.
