NIHR provides the framework through which research in the NHS is managed in England. NIHR Integrated Academic Training (IAT) funds NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowships (NIHR ACFs) and NIHR Clinical Lectureships (NIHR CLs) to support doctors and dentists in pursuing an academic clinical career. Allocations of NIHR ACF and CL posts are given to IAT partnerships comprising Health Education England local offices (HEElos)/Medical or Dental School and NHS Organisation on an annual basis.

NIHR ACF and the NIHR CL posts together with the NIHR In-Practice Fellowships make up part of the Integrated Academic Pathway recommended in the Report. “Medically and dentally qualified academic staff: Recommendations for training the researchers and educators of the future”.
