About us:

Swansea Bay UHB covers a population of approximately 390,000 in the Swansea and Neath Port Talbot areas, with an annual budget of around £1bn. The health board employs approximately 12,500 staff. It has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton in Swansea, and Neath Port Talbot Hospital in Port Talbot. We also have a community hospital and primary care resource centres providing clinical services outside the main hospitals. Primary care independent contractors play an essential role in the care of our population and the health board commissions services from GPs, opticians, pharmacists and dentists across the area. We have 49 GP practices in our health board area, 72 dental practices including orthodontists, 31 optometry practices and 92 community pharmacies. Mental health and learning disabilities services are provided both in hospital and community settings. The Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery at Morriston Hospital forms part of the UK network of burns and plastic surgery units, covering Wales, and the south west of England. Morriston is one of two specialist cardiac surgery services in Wales. Other specialist services provided by the health board included cleft lip and palate, renal, fertility and bariatric surgery. Forensic mental health services are provided to a wider community which extends across the whole of South Wales. The health board has an excellent reputation for research and innovation, with excellent links with Swansea University.

Lifestyle:

Whether you enjoy the quiet life or the great outdoors, have a young family, seek out night life or like to indulge in retail therapy, the Swansea Bay region has it all. Swansea is the second largest city in Wales with a mixture of major retailers, independent boutiques, bars and restaurants and a marina, not to mention the sweeping seafront and beach. Swansea has a vibrant cultural scene, with museums, theatre, music and art playing a prominent role in the city. One of the 20th century's most influential writers and poets, Dylan Thomas, came from Swansea and a permanent exhibition, Love the Words, which tells the story of his work and life, can be found at the Dylan Thomas Centre. Swansea is surrounded by exceptionally beautiful countryside and coastline. The Gower Peninsula was the first place in the UK to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty more than 60 years ago. It has three National Nature Reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Three of the beaches have attained the European Blue Flag award for cleanliness: Caswell Bay, Langland Bay and Port Eynon, and Rhossili Bay, a three-mile stretch of gleaming white sand, has been named Europe’s third best beach, after Sicily’s Rabbit Beach and Playa de las Catedrales in Galicia, Spain. It's one of dozens of beaches suitable for everything from sandcastle building to surfing. Living in Swansea is a pleasure: Glasgow University named it as one of the best places to live in the UK and in 2018, the seaside village of Mumbles topped The Sunday Times' list of the Best Places to Live. In October 2019, the average house sale price in Swansea was £179,617. After qualifying in 2003, I moved to Wales to carry out specialist training in Emergency Medicine. I enjoy my experience here so much that I continue to work for this health board. My particular interests include pre-hospital trauma resuscitation, airway management and clinical governance. In the Morriston Hospital Emergency Department, I have previously been the lead for trauma reception and resuscitation and I am now heading up the implementation of the South and West Wales and South Powys Major Trauma Network. In 2012, I created an all-Wales Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS Cymru), in partnership with the Wales Air Ambulance Charity. This unique Public Sector and Third Sector partnership is now delivering consultant-led pre-hospital critical care as part of the largest air ambulance operation in the UK. The service offers development opportunities through clinical fellowships and the PHEM training programme, all leading to a career in HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services). In a UK first, training and employment with the service is all part of a medic’s NHS job plan. I am now a Health Foundation Fellow, undertaking a qualification in quality improvement and leadership at the Ashridge Executive College.

There aren’t many places you can cycle along the beachfront to get to work, but Swansea Bay is one of them. After cycling along the sweeping beachfront you then get to work in an environment that is welcoming and inclusive. Joy at work is found in spades and support comes from all around. With close links to Swansea University there is plenty of opportunity to teach medical students both on the wards and more formally in the university. There is lots of ongoing research and with the many tertiary services in Morriston there is plenty of variety. My own experience of supportive and enabling seniors has led to poster prizes at national events and winning the Wales BEST trainee for Quality Improvement Project through the Deanery. When working in Singleton, you are a stone’s throw from the beach and, after looking longingly out the window during the day, BBQ dinners on the beach followed by cocktails become a regular occurrence. In my experience, why would you want to train.work.live anywhere else?
