About

NHS Lothian is the second largest health board in Scotland serving the fastest growing population. We cover four local authority areas, including the city of Edinburgh. As one of the largest healthcare organisations in the UK, we invest approximately £1.6 billion a year in protecting and improving the health and wellbeing of our communities. Our permanent workforce of over 28,000 delivers a comprehensive range of primary, community-based and acute hospital services to a population of over 850,000 people. We have 21 hospitals, 119 GP practices, 182 community pharmacies, 173 general dental practices and 127 optometry practices. As a regional centre, we also provide some services for patients in neighbouring areas and we are a national centre of expertise for other specialties, serving people across Scotland. We have recently invested in a brand-new children’s hospital, the Royal Hospital for Children & Young People, and a new state of the art Department for Clinical Neurosciences. Now is also an exciting time to join our ophthalmology and oncology teams as we embark on plans to invest significant capital into building leading treatment and research centres.

The city hosts the annual Festival Fringe and world-famous Hogmanay events and has great transport links, being home to Scotland’s busiest airport and the UK’s second largest train station.
