We are one of London's leading hospitals with a world-class reputation, but our roots lie in the heart of our community. Every day we care for patients from some of the most deprived communities in the capital and from some of the wealthiest. Our globally renowned specialties – including liver, diabetes and sickle cell – are largely driven by the health problems of our ethnically diverse local community. King's is also one of the UK’s largest teaching hospitals. We train 400 doctors, 275 nurses and 750 dentists each year, in partnership with King’s College London. As a result, we are now one of the UK’s largest and busiest hospitals, providing a full range of services for people in the London boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham as well as specialist provision for patients in the South East and further afield. Our reputation extends beyond London and the UK. King’s is recognised internationally for its work in liver disease and transplantation, neurosciences, cardiac, blood cancers and fetal medicine.

Making a difference to the community

As an NHS Foundation Trust, we reach out to the community and team up with local councils and groups to improve our services. From working with police teams to tackle violent crime and anti-social behaviour, to lobbying for improvements to transport, King’s has the reputation and the influence to be more than a local hospital. In partnership with small businesses in the area, we are creating a two-way exchange of local services and skills.

King’s in the media

Our achievements regularly appear in the local and national media. From new surgical techniques to innovations in research, our reputation keeps growing. The Channel 4 TV documentary 24 Hours in A&E was based at King's. The programme showed how our Emergency Department staff, and other medical and surgical teams across the hospital, worked together to treat seriously ill patients.

Pioneering research

Patients and clinicians come to King’s from all over the world because of our reputation as pioneers in medical research. Transferring the results of this research from bench to patient bedside is now quicker and easier thanks to the establishment of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre.
