What is fairness?

Fairness is a paradox. Somehow this short, simple, logical, peaceful
word inevitably and ironically leads to endless, complex, vehement,
violent arguments. Why is fairness so elusive? Perhaps fairness is so
subjective and abstract that it invites selfishness and spite. Before we
seek fairness, we must first understand its elusive, paradoxical nature.
