Rapid Response:

what about the breastfed baby in this scenario?

As a GP and the mother of a young baby I was pleased to see this
common problem addressed. I was however, horrified that at no point in
this article was breastfeeding even mentioned.
The article assumes from the outset that babies are
formula fed, perhaps a sad indictment of the UKs appalling
breastfeeding rates. I appreciate that it is most useful
to be aware of which formulas are most appropriate for
individual problems however the challenges for a
breastfeeding mother whose baby has cows milk intolorance
or reflux cannot be underestimated. In particular the
challenge of getting a breast fed baby to take any
medications (especially Gaviscon) is one which many
childless GPs (myself pre-baby included) have no training
in whatsover and indeed the "normal" mechanics of
breastfeeding are sadly an undertaught area in the
undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum.
