I applaud John Roddick's proposal for a Centre for Professional
Integrity. I chair COPE (the Committee on Publication Ethics) which
requires its members to follow its good practice guidelines and might
therefore be viewed as promoting professional integrity for journal
editors. We also advise editors about how to respond to cases of suspected
research and publication misconduct and it is depressing how often they
meet a brick wall when they try to raise concerns with academic
institutions. We would welcome initiatives that would identify a person to
take responsibility for research conduct who could be contacted by
editors, or anybody else, with concerns.
