Rx for MDs

17 November 2008

The role of a doctor is impossible. First, the doctor must recognize that he or
she is sick and scared, just like the patient. Second, the doctor must weave a
tapestry of hope and hopelessness, by functioning as clinician and magician,
scientist and alchemist, parent and priest, athletic director and funeral director.
All of this haunts doctors and alienates them from their families and
communities. Doctors should not be expected to function as apologists or
salesmen for a healthcare system that obviously does not have all the answers.
