Duration and magnitude of the postoperative risk of venous thromboembolism in middle aged women: prospective cohort study

I was not quite clear on what constituted a pulmonary embolus in this
paper.

I presume that all deaths attributed to thromboembolism/PE had to be
confirmed on post mortem?

If not then one has to question whether they were actually PEs or the
more common myocardial events.
