The Parent-Child Relationship

Notwithstanding their distinguishing characteristics, most theories of
personality focus on the same thing: the parent-child relationship, with all its
nuances, conflicts, and contradictions. The primordial parent-child relationship
is uniquely powerful in shaping personality and serves as the template for all
future relationships. Childhood doesn’t last forever, but the effects of
childhood do.
