Rapid Response:

cycle paths

Thank you, Des, for spelling out the importance of cycling as a
crucial response to the seemingly unrelated challenges of climate change
and declining physical fitness. I hope that your message will be read and
heeded by the Scottish Government, at least. While they have set very
strong targets for CO2 emissions in their recent Climate Bill, and are
starting to propose a sensible cycle action plan, this year's budget saw
£140 million EXTRA for road building, with nothing extra at all for
cycling and walking!

I am fortunate in being able to cycle for most of my 5 mile journey
to work along the Union canal tow path,( all my weekly exercise
requirements taken care of, safely.....) A grant to Sustrans a few years
ago allowed the surface to be transformed from a muddy bog into a decent
road, and the number of cyclists and walkers using it has certainly
doubled since then. The conclusion is obvious, that more investment like
this on safe paths will reap huge benefits, but the funding has stopped.
What is stopping Alex Salmond from taking action which will help him
achieve some of his most important policy aims?
