Dear Editor,
Thomas x 2 (BMJ letter – 9 December 2006) have offered some miracle cures
for hiccups. Although less fun than some of those mentioned, could I
recommend my Granny’s cure?
Take out a bundle of £1 notes, and offer one for each hiccup the
afflicted person can manage within the next minute. If £1 notes are in
short supply, use £5 or £10 notes.
This cure, believed to have originated in the streets of Glasgow,
seldom fails, but does draw attention to a lack of diagnostic criteria for
pseudo-hiccups.
