Reid and Mikri rightly highlight the huge change that has occured in
gynaecological practice, and are probably correct it their attribution of
this to the "Mirena IUS".

The gradual and prolonged fall in hysterectomy rates over 10 years
since its introduction should be reassuring that this effect is not just a
short term .

Of course it should not be forgotten that the IUS is an excellent
contraceptive method, particularly for older women.

Between 1998-9 and 2003-4 the number of laprascopic sterilisations
have halved from 46,990 to 23,700, probably also due to the Mirena IUS .
