Rapid Response:

The real cure for AIDS

While billions are spent to find an AIDS vaccine, better drugs that
will prolong life and various types of condoms to protect against STD's we
fail to remember that the best way to stop the AIDS epidemic is for all of
us to start being responsible with our sexuality. I agree with many of
Geeta Rao Gupta's points, and I do not consider it a waste to spend
millions, even billions on medical research. I also agree with her point
that the inequality between men and women is a major problem. However, I
believe that is only part of the root of the problem.

The real answers to this dillema will only be found when people world
over start treating each other with the respect they deserve. Let me
elaborate, When men start treating their wives fairly and as equals. When
men value their families so much as not to go hunting for prostitutes
every other night and jeapordizing both their future and his families.
When women realize the serious dangers of allowing men to disrespect them
and when women begin to value themselves.

While piles of drugs lay usless on American and European shelves,
literally millions of Africans are dying. This is not a fantasy, this is
life. While it may take many years to develop an effective vaccine, and
even more to get it practically to the Africans who need it, this is
something we can do now. We can discourage domineering men from taking 5
wives and having sex with dozens more prostitutes. We can seek to help
those African women who are often sold and forced into prostitution by
putting pressure on their governments to get rid of such near slave
masters. We can encourage men and women to be faithful to their families
for their sake as well as their childrens. This is not just a band-aid on
the problem, this is a long-term solution that can work.
