Marmot says government can’t afford to ignore health inequality

    The cost of not tackling inequalities in health care is so great that it is “not an option,” Michael Marmot, author of the recent government commissioned report (BMJ 2010;340:c818, doi:10.1136/bmj.c818), said at a conference in London on 12 February.

    Professor Marmot told the conference, organised by the Marmot Review Group at University College London, that the economic case for improving the public’s health was clear. He said, “It is part of the government’s policy to prolong the working age [to 68], but most people won’t achieve this age disability free.”
