An additional pathogenic factor for XP is low HDL levels, because HDL is a main player in reverse cholesterol transport, a process in charge of removal of superfluous cholesterol from peripheral tissues [2,12]. This can partially explain the formation of XP in normolipidemic patients with low HDL levels.
