The government has proposed a mandatory code for alcohol retailers in England and Wales that bans “all you can drink” promotions but fails to crack down on the sale of cheap alcohol in supermarkets.
The move has disappointed campaigners, such as the Royal College of Physicians, who have called for a minimum price for a unit of alcohol. Earlier this month a report from the House of Commons health select committee estimated that a minimum price of 50p (€0.6; $0.8) per unit of alcohol would prevent 3000 deaths a year (BMJ 2010;340:c136, 12 Jan, doi:10.1136/bmj.c136).
