Summary of diagnostic criteria for depression and anxiety from Diagnostic & Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, 3rd revision
DEPRESSION
Full case (major depression): At least 5 of the symptoms listed below have been present during the same two-week period, at least one of which is either depressed mood or loss of interest:
Borderline case (minor depression):At least 3 of the following symptoms have each been present during the same two-week period, at least one of which is either depressed mood or loss of interest:
Depressed mood
Loss of interest
Problems with concentration/thinking/decisiveness
Suicidal plans or acts
Worthlessness/guilt
Appetite disturbance
Sleep disturbance
Psychomotor agitation or retardation
Tiredness/exhaustion
ANXIETY
Generalised anxiety disorder
Full case: unrealistic or excessive anxiety or worries about two or more life circumstances for >6 months with at least 6 associated symptoms of motor tension, autonomic hyperactivity and vigilance and scanning.
Borderline case (study specific criteria): unrealistic or excessive anxiety about two or more life circumstances for a period of 2 weeks to 6 months with >6 associated symptoms, or unrealistic or excessive anxiety about two or more life circumstances for a period of >6 months with >3 associated symptoms
Panic Disorder
Full case: four or more panic attacks occurring in a one month period or 1-3 attacks followed by a period of at least one month of persistent fear of having another attack. At least 4 associated autonomic symptoms such as dyspnoea or tachycardia must have been experienced during at least one of these attacks.
Borderline case (study specific criteria): attacks accompanied by 1-3 symptoms
Agoraphobia
Full case only: (rated in the absence of panic disorder): significant fear of being in places or situations from which escape might be difficult or embarrassing and which results in restriction of travel, the need for a companion when away from home or the endurance of agoraphobic situations despite intense anxiety.
