Gordon Nicholson
Former general practitioner Bournemouth (b 1926; q Guy’s Hospital, London,
1949; FRCGP), died from ruptured aneurysm of abdominal aorta on 1 June 2006.
After National Service as medical officer to the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment
in Hong Kong, Gordon went into his late father’s practice in Bournemouth,
which later grew into a group that included his younger brother. He was interested
in the advancement of general practice, promoting at an early stage health
visitor and district nurse attachments, and was for many years a general
practice trainer. He was secretary for four years of the Bournemouth branch
of the BMA and its representative at the annual representatives’ meeting,
later becoming secretary of the Wessex branch. He was elected FRCGP in 1986.
Gordon loved classical music, and on retirement in 1988 he learnt to play
the ’cello with expertise. He leaves a wife, Margaret; two sons (one a general
practitioner in Byron Bay, Australia); a daughter; and six grandchildren.
