Eric Sarraff
Former general practitioner Batley (b Egypt 1914; q Edinburgh 1942), d
24 November 2005.
Eric came to Batley Hospital as resident house surgeon in 1945 and never
left the Heavy Woollen District. In 1950 he took over the practice of Sir
Alfred Broughton (when he became MP for Batley and Morley) and continued
to serve the population of Batley until his retirement in 1985. Always interested
in anaesthetics, Eric was clinical assistant at the Dewsbury and Batley Hospitals.
He was a member of the local medical committee, served on many health authority
committees, and continued as a premises inspector for many years after retirement.
Active in the BMA and RCGP (Yorkshire Faculty), Eric went out of his way
to befriend doctors moving into the area. Outside medicine he supported a
wide range of community groups, being a Freemason and a past president of
his local Conservative association. He leaves a wife, Joyce; two sons; and
