Alan Hamilton Cruickshank
Former reader in pathology University of Liverpool (b Maxwelltown, Dumfriesshire, 15 September 1913; q Aberdeen 1937; MD), died from pneumonia following a stroke on 7 November 2005, aged 92.Alan was research fellow with Professor Peter Medawar in Oxford, 1939-1942. He gained his MD from Aberdeen in 1942. From 1946 to 1948 he was Commonwealth Fund Fellow at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore; from 1948 he was lecturer in pathology at Liverpool University, subsequently senior lecturer then reader until 1978. He married Eva Dilling in 1954 and had three sons, two of them becoming medically qualified.
Alan was a national authority for his knowledge of pancreatic and salivary gland disease, publishing extensively on the subject. He is fondly remembered both for his small and large group teaching, inspiring a whole generation of students and career pathologists. After retirement he worked for six months for the United Nations setting up a Department of Pathology in Kathmandu, Nepal.
His enthusiasm for his subject remained undiminished: he worked as a pathologist all over the north west of England long after his official retirement, until his age disqualified him. In his 80s he published a second edition of his textbook of pancreatic pathology with his colleague Emr Benbow.
Alan enjoyed a long, active, and healthy retirement, and he was still attending Grand Rounds at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and meetings at the Liverpool Medical Institution in his 90s.
In later years Alan cared for Eva, who was disabled by strokes, but after her death in 2000 he travelled extensively and remained independent until his final illness. [Robert Cruickshank]
