David Ward Smith
Former general practitioner Rushden, Northamptonshire (b 1928; q Cambridge/Middlesex Hospital, London, 1951; MRCGP), died from carcinomatosis on 24 July 2005.David qualified from Downing College, Cambridge, and the Middlesex Hospital. His initial appointments were at the Middlesex and Dollis Hill. Two years’ national service in Korea was followed by house jobs at Edgware General Hospital and a year as a GP trainee in Borehamwood.
David entered general practice in Rushden in March 1957 and over the next 40 years earned the respect of his colleagues and patients by understanding and giving time to the real and important rather than the superficial and transient. His profound knowledge and his energy fuelled his tutorials as a GP trainer and were the cornerstone of his insightful contributions at postgraduate meetings.
Living within and contributing to his local community was important as he embraced work as a parish councillor and tree warden in the village of Podington. His passions for mountaineering, gliding, diving, and travelling were balanced by his love of gardening, theatre, reading, and cooking.
David’s wisdom, humour, and modesty will be missed.
He leaves Margaret, his wife, and four children, Sarah, Philip, Rachel, and Gregory. [Steven Hogg]
