Stuart Hishon
Consultant physician James Paget Hospital, Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk 1981-94 (b Portsmouth 1945; q Westminster Hospital 1970; BSc, FRCP), died from hepatorenal failure on 14 February 2005.
Following qualification from Westminster Hospital and house jobs in London, Stuart joined the medical registrar rotation at St James’s Hospital, Leeds, then moved with his wife, Jenny, to East Anglia, where he was senior registrar in gastroenterology at the Norfolk & Norwich and then at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. In 1981 he was appointed the first consultant gastroenterologist at the newly commissioned James Paget Hospital in Norfolk, where he founded and developed a thriving department of gastroenterology. He was also a talented general physician, much respected for his clinical judgment and frequently asked to provide a second opinion. He loved the hospital and life in East Anglia with his wife and son. He was a sparkling and witty companion, with interests in music, philosophy, and military history, and was an enthusiastic if erratic skier. Soon, however, a depressive illness, which had first shown itself during his time as a senior registrar, took hold and blighted his life. He retired in 1994 at the age of 49 with the hope that the disease process would abate. It did not, and his last years were spent in and out of hospital with declining health. He is survived by Jenny and his son, Rory. [David Wayne, Jenny Jenkins]
